Meme, Myself, and I: LOLcats

We’re introducing a regular feature here on the Tech tAUk blog all about internet memes. For those of you who don’t know what a meme is, give this a read.

For those of you who don’t get what “O RLY?” or “Rickroll” means, we’re going to give you a few lessons in memeology.

First up, the LOLcat.

Good question, fatty.

LOLcats are pictures of cats (for the most part, though people can get in on the action) with humorous captions attached to them. For added giggles, words are deliberately spelled incorrectly. The traditional font used for LOLcat pictures is Impact.

An article written about the meme in Time Magazine in 2007 helped introduce it to a wider audience. The website I Can Has Cheezburger features thousands and thousands of user-submitted pictures. The website is named after the caption on the very first LOLcat picture ever posted.

We honor this classic meme with our own little Tech tAUk tribute.

Stay tuned for more fun memes in the future!
